Help Wanted

November 6, 2026

This is an installment of a regular newsletter from Mennonite Union Aid Canada that is sent as a mass email to all policyholders. Its purpose is to keep you informed of things we think will be helpful to you and to us. This is not a private email targeting only you.

If you are reading this in your email inbox, you can select here for a better viewing experience and here to see past newsletters.

If you're young and dreaming of finding employment the title of this post will pique your interest. If you follow a "Help Wanted" ad like this one and realize that this is your dream job, you will likely get on the phone immediately and follow up to be sure you didn't miss your chance.

Now let's turn this around a little. Every year in November, congregations across the country get together and choose workers for the various jobs in the congregation. When you take that ballot in hand or raise your hand in support of one or another worker you are in fact part of the HR team for your congregation.

Do you ever wish that you knew who was the most suited to the post you're trying to fill? Do you stop and ask yourself; "will this brother or sister take their responsibility seriously? Will they stop what they are doing when necessary to ensure this job gets done properly?"

Some jobs we vote for demand so little attention they are almost a formality; but others are important and very time-consuming. Some are enjoyable but others take a fair bit of grit and determination to complete. One thing is certain and applies to nearly every job on that committee list: finding a blessing in doing the job will require that we face it with enthusiasm and do a little more than just what is required.

Now for some specifics. The reason this is being written is to inform the readers of the tasks that will be required of the brethren who are voted into your local MUA committee. There are three positions to fill; the district secretary and two evaluators.

The secretary position is the most demanding. His tasks will include:

  • Filling out PDF forms and sending them as email attachments
  • Keeping an organized set of files on his PC
  • Using MUA's policy management software

Essentially the MUA secretary is the equivalent of an insurance sales agent and should be prompt and available as needed. It is also very helpful if there is enough enthusiasm for this work that the candidate will take time out of a sometimes busy schedule to help a brother or sister review their policy for updates or errors. Another important asset is if the district secretary is forward enough to speak his concerns to the entire congregation if and when it is needed.

For the other committee members the amount of time spent will be significantly less but they should be active supports and share the workload with the secretary. Some knowledge or at least an active interest in property and equipment values is beneficial.

Of course, the reason this committee exists at all is because mishaps and disasters are part of everyday life. At such times the entire committee should be available as needed to assess damages and discuss a claim settlement.

We hope these points can be helpful as you select brethren for the MUA committee; and may God bless all the members who are chosen to fill positions at the upcoming annual elections.
